Your butt consists of the glute muscles, which are the largest muscle group in your body, consisting of the glute minimus, glute medius, and glute maximus. These muscles play a vital role in the way we sit, stand, walk, run, and jump. In theory, if properly strengthened, your glutes can improve performance.
These muscles control many different movements, such as hip extension, hip abduction, hip internal rotation, and hip external rotation. The stronger these movements are, the better your athletic performance will be. Stronger glutes will help improve your speed, agility, and jumping ability. As an athlete, the more you move the more you are at risk for an injury. When your glutes are strong, you will have more control in the single leg position (where most of our time is spent as athletes). When you are stable in the single leg position, you will ultimately have a decrease in compression forces down the leg in areas such as your knee and ankle. In theory, this will decrease your risk of injury in those areas.
Another injury that may be the most relevant that stronger glutes can help with is low back pain. The stronger your glutes are, the more ‘stable’ your pelvis will be. Weak glutes may also cause biomechanical imbalances in the pelvis and hip muscles, which can lead to pain in your low back. Another way low back pain can occur from prolonged sitting. In theory, the longer you sit you less activate your glutes will be, which will cause other muscles, such as your hip flexors to be contracted, leading to an increase in pressure in your lower back.
In conclusion, if your backside is strong you are in a better position!
